Kate & Kyle’s Wedding at The Hummingbird Barn in Erin, Ontario

Kate and Kyle’s wedding at The Hummingbird in Erin was one of those days where we barely had to move to find another beautiful spot for photos. Between the dock overlooking the water, the enormous willow tree, the apple orchard, and the old barn itself, the property gave us a ridiculous amount of variety without ever having to leave the venue.

But what made the day memorable wasn’t just the scenery. It was Kyle’s reaction when he first saw Kate, their emotional outdoor ceremony beneath the willow tree, a friend performing a song he’d written specifically for them, and a reception that went from heartfelt speeches to a packed dance floor.

The Hummingbird is a relatively new wedding and event venue in Erin, Ontario, and after photographing Kate and Kyle’s wedding there, I can see why couples looking for a countryside wedding venue near the GTA would fall for it. Here’s a look at how their day unfolded.

Getting Ready at The Hummingbird

The morning began in the charming bridal suite, where Kate got ready alongside her bridesmaids, one of their babies, and her mum, who helped her into her wedding-day look.

Getting-ready photos are about more than the dress and the finishing touches. They’re an opportunity to document the people who are there for you before the day gets going, along with the little interactions that might otherwise pass in a blur.

With Kate’s mum helping her prepare and the bridesmaids sharing the morning together, there were plenty of those moments to photograph before we headed outside.

A First Look by the Water

For their first look, we headed to the dock overlooking the property’s pond. Calling it a pond almost feels unfair; it’s large enough to give the area a distinctly lakeside feel, with plenty of open water and greenery surrounding it.

Kyle turned around to see Kate, and his reaction was fantastic. He was completely blown away and couldn’t take his eyes off her.

It’s hard to beat a first look like that. The excitement, the emotion, and the way someone looks at their partner when they see them in their wedding attire for the first time are the kinds of things I want to preserve in photographs without interrupting the moment itself.

The dock also gave us a beautiful backdrop, with the water and surrounding landscape adding to the atmosphere without distracting from the two of them.

Wedding Portraits Beneath the Willow Tree and in the Orchard

After the first look, we took advantage of the incredible scenery around The Hummingbird for some portraits of the newlyweds-to-be.

We started beneath the property’s enormous willow tree. Its sweeping branches and layers of foliage created a naturally romantic setting, and the photographs we made there had a lovely, almost storybook quality to them.

From there, we moved into the orchard for a different look before bringing the bridal party into the mix. The orchard added another distinctly countryside backdrop, while the old barn gave us the opportunity to incorporate more of the venue’s rustic character.

We finished up with separate portraits of the bridesmaids and groomsmen near the water.

One of the things I appreciate about venues like The Hummingbird is how much variety you can get without spending half your photography time travelling between locations. Within a relatively small area, we were able to create portraits with greenery, open water, orchard trees, and historic barn architecture.

For couples planning a barn wedding in Erin or elsewhere in Southern Ontario, that kind of variety can make a real difference to your final gallery.

An Outdoor Wedding Ceremony Beneath the Willow Tree

The ceremony took place beneath the magnificent willow tree beside the water, and it’s difficult to imagine a more fitting setting for an outdoor wedding in Erin.

It was a beautifully sunny day, so Kate and Kyle had thoughtfully provided parasols for their guests. Along with keeping everyone comfortable, they suited the relaxed outdoor atmosphere of the celebration.

The tree created a natural canopy above the ceremony, with the water and greenery forming the backdrop. It was scenic as hell, to put it plainly.

More importantly, the ceremony itself was genuinely emotional. There were so many meaningful moments as Kate and Kyle exchanged their vows, surrounded by the people who mattered most to them.

As a wedding photographer, I’m always looking for the reactions happening around the main event, too: the smiles, the tears, the glances between family members, and those little expressions that tell you just how much a moment means.

With such a beautiful setting and an emotional ceremony, there was plenty to capture.

Family Photos and Cocktail Hour

After the ceremony, we gathered everyone together for family portraits before Kate and Kyle joined their guests for cocktail hour on the patio outside the barn.

Family photographs are an important part of the wedding gallery, and having a list of requested groupings prepared beforehand helps keep things moving. The aim is to capture those important combinations without keeping everyone away from the celebrations for too long.

Once the photos were finished, Kate and Kyle could relax, catch up with their guests, and enjoy the atmosphere they’d created.

The patio was a lovely place for everyone to mingle before heading inside for the reception, and the transition from the outdoor ceremony to cocktail hour and then the barn kept the day flowing naturally.

A Rustic Barn Wedding Reception Filled With Flowers

Inside, the barn had a warm, welcoming atmosphere, with natural wood, beautiful floral arrangements, and rustic details throughout the space.

The reception began with a high-energy entrance from the bridal party and the newlyweds, immediately bringing the room to life.

Then came one of the most personal moments of the evening. A friend of Kate and Kyle’s sat down at the piano and performed a song he’d written specifically for them.

It’s difficult to think of a more thoughtful wedding gift. Having someone create an original song for you and perform it in front of your closest friends and family is the sort of personal touch that makes a wedding feel completely your own.

It was also a reminder that some of the most memorable parts of a wedding aren’t necessarily the things you can plan down to the last detail. They’re the moments that come from the people around you.

Emotional Speeches and a Walk Through Their Lives

The speeches brought another round of laughter and emotion, with friends and family sharing stories and celebrating Kate and Kyle.

One particularly touching moment came when Kyle’s mum shared a slideshow featuring photographs from the couple’s lives. Seeing those memories brought together for the occasion gave everyone a glimpse into their story and how they’d arrived at this point.

As a photographer, I love documenting these parts of a reception. The speeches themselves are important, of course, but so are the reactions around the room: a proud parent, friends laughing at a familiar story, or the couple looking at each other as someone recounts a memory.

After the speeches, Kate and Kyle cut their wedding cake before we stepped outside for a few more portraits.

Golden-Hour Portraits at The Hummingbird

We headed back outside as the afternoon light softened, taking advantage of the golden-hour glow for another set of portraits.

The grounds at The Hummingbird are particularly well suited to this part of the day. Between the willow tree, the pond, the orchard, and the barn, there are plenty of ways to make the most of the changing light.

Golden hour is one of my favourite opportunities to create portraits that feel a little different from those taken earlier in the day. The warmer light, longer shadows, and softer atmosphere can add a beautiful finishing touch to a wedding gallery.

I always encourage couples to leave a little room in their timeline for sunset portraits if the weather and schedule allow. Even 10–15 minutes away from the reception can be worthwhile, and it gives you a chance to spend a few quiet moments together amid the excitement of the day.

For Kate and Kyle, it was the perfect opportunity to take in the surroundings once more before the evening celebrations continued.

First Dance, Family Dances, and a Lively Dance Floor

After the portraits, we headed downstairs for the party.

Kate and Kyle shared their first dance, followed by a combined mother-son and father-daughter dance. It was another lovely moment with family before the evening shifted into full celebration mode.

And the dance floor certainly delivered.

Guests filled the floor, the energy kept building, and the party carried on while others took the opportunity to spend time outside around the fire pit.

I love this part of a wedding day because it gives everyone the freedom to celebrate in their own way. Some guests want to be on the dance floor all night; others would rather catch up with friends around a fire. Having spaces for both makes for a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

By the end of the evening, Kate and Kyle’s wedding had covered just about everything: emotional moments, thoughtful personal touches, beautiful portraits, and a proper party.

Why The Hummingbird Is Worth Considering for an Erin Barn Wedding

The Hummingbird is a relatively new wedding and event venue in Erin, Ontario, but it has a lot going for it for couples planning a countryside celebration.

The barn provides a warm, rustic setting for the reception, while the surrounding property offers a surprising amount of variety for outdoor ceremonies and wedding portraits.

The pond and dock are ideal for a first look, the orchard provides a beautiful natural setting for photographs, and the enormous willow tree makes an impressive backdrop for an outdoor ceremony. Add the patio and fire pit, and there’s room for the day to unfold across several distinct spaces without having to leave the property.

For couples searching for barn wedding venues in Ontario, Erin wedding venues, or a countryside setting within reach of the GTA, The Hummingbird is well worth adding to the list.

From a photography perspective, I particularly appreciate venues where the surroundings add to the story rather than becoming the entire story. At Kate and Kyle’s wedding, we had beautiful scenery to work with, but the moments that made the gallery special were still the ones involving the two of them and their favourite people.
