When Josh reached out to me about photographing his proposal to Kelsey, I knew right away this was going to be something special. Kelsey had always dreamed of being proposed to on a boat, and Josh had found the perfect location to make that dream a reality: a quiet stretch of Lake Huron near Wiarton, a place that held a lifetime of memories for her family.
As a proposal photographer, I often get to witness incredible moments, but this one was truly unique.
One of the biggest challenges of proposal photography is staying hidden while still being in the perfect position to capture the moment. Thankfully, Josh and Kelsey’s dad put together an incredible plan.
Kelsey’s family has spent their summers on Lake Huron for as long as she can remember, making the location deeply meaningful. Knowing how important the lake was to her, Josh decided it would be the perfect place to ask one of the biggest questions of his life.
To keep the proposal a surprise, Kelsey’s dad arranged for me to join a friend’s boat. While Josh and Kelsey headed out for what seemed like a relaxing evening boat ride, we quietly positioned ourselves nearby, circling at a distance and waiting for the right moment.
The coordination between Josh and Kelsey’s dad was exceptional. Every detail was carefully planned, allowing me to be ready when the proposal finally happened.
As the sun began to settle over Lake Huron, Josh found the perfect moment.
From our boat, I watched as he got down on one knee and asked Kelsey to marry him.
The excitement, surprise, and emotion on Kelsey’s face were impossible to miss. These are the moments that make proposal photography so rewarding—the genuine reactions that happen only once.
After she said yes, the newly engaged couple spent some time together on the boat, soaking in the reality of what had just happened. There was no rush, no schedule, just two people enjoying one of the happiest moments of their lives surrounded by a place that meant so much to them.
One of my favourite parts of the evening came after the proposal itself.
Josh and Kelsey brought the boat closer to shore and stepped into the shallow water, walking hand in hand along the coastline. The combination of the clear water, rugged shoreline, and soft evening light created an incredible backdrop for engagement photos.
Waiting nearby was their family, eager to celebrate the news.
Watching Kelsey share the moment with her loved ones was a reminder that a proposal isn’t just about two people. It’s often the beginning of a new chapter that brings families together as well.
The joy, excitement, hugs, and happy tears made for some of the most meaningful photographs of the evening.
Following that the three of us took a few minutes to get a quick photo session capturing the glow and smiles that they both were just reveling in. The pure bliss on their faces was just wonderful to see and immortalize, and I just love the candid nature of it as she could not stop giggling and staring at him or the ring.
One thing I always tell couples planning a proposal is that the location doesn’t need to be famous; it needs to be meaningful.
For Josh and Kelsey, Lake Huron wasn’t simply a beautiful backdrop. It was part of Kelsey’s story. It was where her family had spent countless summers, where memories had been made for years, and where she had always imagined this moment happening.
That personal connection is what made this proposal so memorable.
Whether it’s a favourite hiking trail, a family cottage, a waterfront lookout, or a boat ride on the lake, choosing a location with personal significance adds another layer of emotion to your proposal photos.
If you’re planning a surprise proposal and looking for a proposal photographer in Ontario, I’d love to help.
From coordinating logistics and helping you choose the perfect location to capturing the moment discreetly, my goal is to make sure you can focus on the proposal while I focus on preserving the memories.
Whether you’re planning a boat proposal on Lake Huron, a waterfront engagement, a cottage-country surprise proposal, or an intimate moment somewhere meaningful to the two of you, I’d be honoured to help tell your story.
Congratulations again to Josh and Kelsey. It was a privilege to witness such a unique and heartfelt proposal, and I wish you both a lifetime of adventures together.
