Cherry Blossom Family Portraits at Spencer Smith Park

Cherry Blossom Season at Spencer Smith Park: A Family Portrait Session in Burlington
Cherry blossom season always brings a special kind of magic to Burlington. For just a couple of weeks, Spencer Smith Park transforms into a pink-and-white dream, drawing in families, photographers, and nature lovers alike. This spring, I had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful family right at the tail end of the bloom—when the petals were starting to fall, and the last few trees had become the center of attention.

Despite the crowd gathered around those remaining blossoms, we managed to find our moments. The parents were calm and patient, the two younger sisters were full of joy, and the eldest—a 12-year-old boy—had that classic tween reluctance about being in photos. I’ve worked with a lot of families over the years, and I’ve learned that sometimes all it takes is the right nudge. A joke here, a comment there… and with the help of his little sisters, we got a few real smiles out of him. Those little in-between moments are always my favourite to capture.
Even with the crowds, Spencer Smith Park delivered the kind of light and colour that only spring can offer. The blossoms served as a perfect soft backdrop, and the waterfront just steps away gave us a chance to add variety to the session—something I always aim for in my family portraits.
Whether you’re in Hamilton or Burlington, spring is a perfect time for outdoor family photos. The cherry blossoms don’t last long, but the memories captured in those short days are something you’ll look back on for years.
